Joel Mittler
Joel Mittler is an executive with over twenty years of management experience working for both small start-up companies as well as Fortune 500 size corportations. He has experience across a wide range of information technologies including database, high performance transaction processing, workflow, image processing and expert systems, blended with exceptional business, financial and operational skills. Joel has a natural ability to 'bridge the gap'' and facilitate meaningful dialogue between the business users of technolgoy solutions and the technical teams responsbile for building and maintaining them. He thrives on bringing diverse technical staff skills and viewpoints together to solve complex problems. Joel's ability to create a safe environment by maintaining composure under pressure, in an environment where the pace of change continues to accelerate, has allowed him to lead very successful organizations.
In a twelve year career at Visa Joel held a variety of management positions with increasing responsibilities. Most recently he led the team responsible for the Business Intelligence and Enterprise Information Platform infrastructure. In this role he lead the development of a five year technology roadmap and supporting business plan and he successfully directed the three year effort to replace 300 plus legacy reporting applications, resulting in $10 million in annual operating expense savings and a 30% reduction in the average cost of delivering new reporting capabilities. He also had leadership responsibility for the three year $50 million re-engineering of Visa’s Clearing and Settlement systems resulting in a 20% reduction in annual maintenance costs and a 30% to 50% reduction in cost of new products and services. Joel provided a leadership role in implementing processes critical to ensuring that the annual portfolio of 50 to 100 projects totaling $30 million were completed on budget, on time and within scope. He ensured 7x24 service level commitments for data availability (99%) and clearing and settlement (99.259%) were met or exceeded in support of processing for 100 million plus transactions a day valued at $6+ billion for 20,000 member banks worldwide.
Previously, Joel spent three years in a variety of management and hands on roles for Trident Document Systems, a small (less than 100 employees) systems integrator providing custom workflow, and image-processing solutions to a variety of industries. Joel had account management responsibilities for the western region office; customers included Levi Strauss, Pacific Bell Telephone, PG&E, and Southern Pacific Railroad. He maintained operating income margins of 34% versus a target of 25% on revenues of $3.7 million.
Earlier, during a five year career, Joel held leadership positions with Syntelligence, Inc a small (120 employees) start-up company delivering expert system solutions to commercial lending and commercial insurance underwriting to major banks and insurance companies around the world. Joel brought his business world experience to this R&D company putting abstract expert systems concepts into practical application with bottom line financial value for both banking and insurance customers.
Joel earned his MBA and his Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from Northeastern University in Boston Massachusetts.
